Natalie Wexler of Forbes.com has written an interesting article entitled "Why Outrage of the SAT 'Adversity Score' is Misplaced". While as an educator and a parent I'm not keen on this score being used - mostly because it does not measure specific characteristics or circumstances of the student - Wexler presents a viewpoint that might be helpful.
I do agree with Wexler that parents should be able to find out what adversity score was assigned to their student. I see no good reason for the secrecy, except maybe so that the College Board doesn't have to defend a score, or to prevent parents from comparing scores for their children to show how flawed an actual score may be.
